Ms. Nami Nitta (M1) from our GEL-SIT has been studying at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand since April 2024 for a one-year research exchange. During her time abroad, she is conducting research on liquefaction from a variety of perspectives, with a particular focus on approaches that take into account New Zealand’s unique soil properties and seismic hazards. Using the advanced technologies and facilities at the University of Canterbury, she is expanding the scope of her research through deeper data analysis and more intensive experimentation than before.
In her research environment, Ms. Nitta engages in lively discussions with many skilled researchers and students, including her supervisor, Prof. Dr. Misko Cubrinovski, a renowned geotechnical engineer. These exchanges have sparked new ideas in her research and helped her gain a deeper understanding of earthquake mechanisms and the effects of liquefaction on local communities and infrastructure. She has also developed ideas that may one day contribute to disaster prevention efforts in Japan.
As part of her extracurricular activities, she participates in a basketball team, where she improves her intercultural communication skills through interactions with teammates from diverse backgrounds. By experiencing New Zealand’s unique natural environment and local way of life, Ms. Nami is growing not only as a researcher but also as an individual, enjoying a fulfilling and well-rounded experience.
We are excited to see what new insights she will bring back from this experience and look forward to her continued growth as a researcher. Keep up the good work, Nitta-san!
